The department is organized in November, 2003 on the basis of the Moscow state university of medicine and dentistry (MSUMD) under the contract with the United Nations Commission on questions of science, education and culture (UNESCO). It is the first similar department in medical universities of Russia.

Main objectives of department:

promotion of a healthy lifestyle, including among pupils there is MSUMD;
prevention of socially important diseases;
assessment of the state of health of the persons working at harmful productions;
protection of reproductive health of the population;
health protection of women during various age periods on harmful productions;
assessment of quality of life.

The department gives lectures and seminar classes on bases of a healthy lifestyle for:

students of faculty of secondary medical education;
students of MSUMD;
interns;
students of faculty of pedagogical education.
